Have a Green Halloween!

Oct 24, 2013 12:00 am

Halloween is almost upon us once again! I am lucky this year, because our 3 year old son is adamant he wants to wear his Bob the Builder costume from last year. It's a bit short now, but hey that's fine with me! With the costume out of the way, I was looking around for an event to attend. I must admit that Halloween is not really my favorite thing - all that candy filled with artificial flavors and high fructose corn syrup usually equals a toddler meltdown of epic proportions, and that's no fun for anyone!

In my event search I was very excited to come across Green Halloween, a non-profit, grassroots community initiative to create healthier and more Earth-friendly holidays, starting with Halloween. It began in the Seattle area in 2007 with backers such as Whole Foods Market and was such a huge success that in 2008, the initiative expanded nation-wide. In cities across the country, volunteer coordinators are making their city’s Halloween holiday healthy and eco-friendly. This year they are hosting nineteen Halloween community events in Boston, Cape Cod, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, Philadelphia, San Franciso and Seattle. Acitivites vary depending on location, but include Halloween crafts, face painting, cookie decorating, apple bobbing and of course trick-or-treating. You can find the all the details here. There is also a list of Green Halloween Zoo events around the country.

Not So Scary Candy: Now, it's the candy that I find the scariest part of Halloween - full of high fructose corn syrup, artifical colors and preservatives. Check out The Natural Candy Store, it is chock full of candy that won't send your kids crazy. You can choose from Milk Chocolate Pumpkin Balls and Halloween Coins (both gluten free and made in the USA) Organic Maple Candy Pumpkin and Ghosts (Vegan friendly and made in the USA), Surf Sweets Natural Gummy Worms (no corn syrup, made with organic sweeteners in the USA) and Mini Ocho Organic Candy Bars (organic, gluten free and made is the USA) just to name a few. Shipping is free on orders $50+ or pay $6.99. They even have a Halloween shipping guide that tells you the deadline to order in time for Halloween. Find all their Halloween Candy here and their Sale candy, which includes several Halloween items, here!

Green Halloween has so many great idea, there just isn't time to talk about them all here. Take a look at these, and go to Green Halloween for more info.
