Five Ways to Save on Movie Tickets!

Sep 25, 2013 12:00 am

Did you catch Bitsy's quick tip this week on how to save money at the movies? Here are five more ways to save:

1) Loyalty Club: If you have a favorite theater that you frequent, check to see if it has a loyalty club. For example, members of the Regal Cinema Crown Club earn 1 point for every dollar spent at the box office on ticket purchases and 4 points for concession purchases.  Fifty credits can be redeemed for a free small popcorn; 150 credits for a free movie ticket. The Stubs rewards program at AMC Theatres costs $12 a year to join. The perks include $10 AMC Stubs Reward for every $100 you spend, free upgrades on concessions, and online ticket purchase fees waived. Fandango even participates in these and other reward programs, check out their site for more details.

2) Warehouse Clubs: This is a great way to buy multiple tickets, and makes a great gift as the tickets don't expire. Costco has a few different options. A 4 pack of Cinemark Platinum Supersaver movie cards is $31.99, while a 10 pack for AMC Gold Experience or Regal Premiere go for $84.99. Sam's Club has two packs for AMC at $16.98 and Cinemark at $15.98.

3) Member Discounts: Don't forget to take advantage of associations or clubs you already belong to. If you are a student, check your Student Life Center for movie ticket deals. AAA offers its members 40% off plus free shipping (or purchase directly from an AAA office), while US Active Duty Military, Veterans, National Guard and Reserve and their families can save 48% on movie tickets through Veterans Advantage (membership fee applies). Most theaters have a senior discount, with tickets discounted around 30%. Jus remember to take your I.D.  Also check to see if your theater has a dedicated Senior or Student day. Lastly, Working Advantage sell discounted movie tickets, so check with your HR department to see if your workplace is a member of it or another employee-discount program.

4) Second Run Theatres: If you're not in a rush to see a movie as soon as it comes out, but still want the experience of the big screen, check to see if there is a second run movie theatre in your area. Ticket prices are greatly reduced, and often there is the added benefit of supporting family businesses.  Check out Cinema Treasures to find one near you.

5) Drive-In Theaters: Remember being a kid and going to the drive-in with the whole family? Re-live your childhood, and save cash at the same time. To find one near you, go to Drive-In Movie for a full list.
