Diet: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is Update!

Jul 18, 2013 12:00 am

Just a quick update to tell you how my DietBet worked out - I won, and actually made a profit!

The 28 days went by pretty quickly. I wasn't thinking about the DietBet all the time, though it was a helpful little reminder in the back of my mind when faced with a tempting food. I dutifully downloaded the DietBet app onto my phone, and did a couple of unofficial weigh ins, but that was about it. About half way in the 28 days, I realized that I probably wasn't going to reach my goal (you have to lose 4% of your body weight) unless I started Medifast again. The thought of losing my $25 wager was enough to motivate me to put in another order. I started Medifast again on July 5th, so I lost the bulk of the 6lbs in the final two weeks of the challenge.

How much weight did I lose? I started the bet at 150.2lbs, and had to lose 6lbs, so I needed to weigh 144.2lbs or under by the end of the 28 days. Well, I scraped in at 144.0lbs, but I did do it!

I guess you're wondering what kind of profit I made? Well, I deliberatley chose a huge DietBet - it had 781 people playing! In the end, 353 people made their goal weight, with 428 people missing out. I was surprised to see so many people not making it, but perhaps that's because this particular bet had July 4th smack in the middle. Anyway, I ended up getting $45.16, which is just under a $20 profit. I haven't decided yet if I'll do another DietBet, or just cash out my money.

In the meanwhile, I'm still doing Medifast, though this time around I am heartily sick of the food. It just doesn't feel that healthy to be eating protein bars, shakes and puddings a good amount of the day. Yes, there are other foods to choose from, but I'm not so good at remembering to prepare them in time. I do also eat the cereals and oatmeal, but they are way too sweet for me. That's something I'd like to see Medifast change - the over the top sweet factor of most of their foods.

I have another 14 lbs to lose before I'm back to 130lbs. I'll post again when I'm halfway there.
